Information Systems

What is Information Systems?

Information systems (IS) is concerned with the application of computer technology to solve business problems. It is different from computer science, which addresses how to write software and engineer the design of computers. An information systems person has sound knowledge of management and business functions (e.g., marketing, finance, production) in addition to knowledge of software applications and telecommunications so that they can solve business problems using the technology. An information systems person is someone who speaks the languages of both business and computers, acting as the go-between for programmers and computer scientists and the rest of the community.

All types and sizes of businesses need information systems and technology graduates:

  • schools
  • hospitals
  • chemical companies
  • agricultural firms
  • social work clinics
  • insurance companies
  • banks
  • technology companies
  • production facilities
  • churches
  • just about any business you can think of.

IS is currently one of the most marketable degrees available.
